Amis's concept of life-in-death has proved difficult for most readers to grasp, and many reviewers of the book have complained that the mystery was unsolvable. Amis insists that he does not believe in reincarnation (though the book makes use of the concept); "it's just a way of looking at life" (Haffenden 18).
